Outreach Tents at Broughton Beach

On Sunday July 8, with YETI Foundation, we hosted an outreach tent at Broughton Beach, a beautiful stretch of sandy beach along the Columbia River near PDX Airport. A stack of lifejackets (provided by Metro through their lifejacket distribution program), a bowl of safety whistles, buckets and trash pickers, and a sign “Free Lifejackets!”. Within 2 hours we distributed 40 lifejackets, fitted entire families with properly fitting lifejackets and emergency whistles. We shared water safety tips for swimming at Broughton: water temp is 71F which means you’ll probably feel cold after 20 minutes, current is running smooth and to the left (west), there’s a drop-off about 15 feet out, watch for boaters and jet skis…. And incentives! Fill a bucket with trash and get a gift certificate for Sesame Donuts. It was fun and easy, we will definitely do this again.

End of summer update: We held 5 outreach tents at Broughton Beach this year, distributing over 230 lifejackets and safety whistles, engaging with whole families in a zero barrier space.

IF ONE PERSON SURVIVES A POTENTIAL DROWNING AS A RESULT OF OUR OUTREACH, WE WILL HAVE SAVED A WORLD. SUCCESS.
